Angelo State University's Veteran of the Year

(L) ASU President retired USAF LTG Ronnie Hawkins presents Tom Nurre with the 2023 Veteran of the Year award. (R) Hawkins and Nurre share a chuckle as they compare Air Force careers. Hawkins is himself an honor ROTC graduate of ASU.

Angelo State University marked Veterans Day by naming retired U.S. Air Force Chief Master Sgt. Thomas G. Nurre, Sr. as the 2023 ASU Veteran of the Year. The award is sponsored by ASU’s Veterans Educational and Transitional Services (VETS) Center and Division of External Affairs. (Click here for the ASU press release.)

Tom is no stranger to San Angelo, having spent several of his 33 Air Force years at Goodfellow AFB, including a stint as Commandant of the NCO Academy. Among his Security Service assignments was a tour with Det. 3 of the 6994th Security Squadron at Nakhon Phanom Royal Thai AFB, where he flew 141 EC-47 missions. He was inducted into the Freedom Through Vigilance Association Hall of Honor in 2000.

Tom and his wife Kitty retired to San Angelo in 1994, but he’d barely hung up his uniform when he was hired to implement Air Force Junior ROTC at a local high school. His involvement with ROTC continues through the Rocky Durso scholarship and the recently endowed TSgt Raymond F. Leftwich scholarship at ASU. Tom is well known in the veterans community, having been a driving force behind creating the EC-47 replica, the ARDF history exhibit, and the Weyandt-Eddy Memorial Plaza at Goodfellow. Congratulations on an honor well deserved!
